Medaka
(Japanese Rice fish)
Buy Medaka – Now Available in North Vancouver
$10 per fish | Minimum purchase: 10 fish (assorted colours)
Bring life, movement, and a touch of Japanese tradition to your outdoor space with Medaka, also known as Japanese rice fish (Oryzias latipes). These hardy, beautiful little fish are ideal for outdoor ponds, small patio water gardens, or even decorative containers.
Why Choose Medaka?
Medaka are more than just ornamental fish — they’re a low-maintenance, high-reward addition to any backyard pond or balcony setup. Here's why Vancouver pond enthusiasts love them:
Cold-Hardy and Climate-Ready
Medaka thrive in a wide temperature range, making them well-suited for Vancouver’s seasonal climate. They can overwinter in outdoor ponds with proper depth and shelter, meaning you don’t have to bring them indoors each year.
Perfect for Small Spaces
No backyard? No problem. Medaka are ideal for mini ponds, patio containers, or tabletop water features. They require minimal space but bring maximum charm.
Low Maintenance, High Enjoyment
Unlike koi or goldfish, medaka produce less waste, need less filtration, and don’t outgrow small ponds. They’re a great option for beginners or anyone looking for a peaceful, low-effort aquatic setup.
Natural Mosquito Control
These agile swimmers eat mosquito larvae, helping to reduce pests in your yard while keeping your water feature healthy and balanced.
Graceful, Peaceful, and Active
With their gentle personalities and constant movement, medaka are mesmerizing to watch. Available in a variety of colors, they bring a calming, living presence to any water garden.

🐟 Medaka Care Guide
How to Keep Japanese Rice Fish Happy in Your Pond or Patio
Whether you're starting a mini water garden or adding life to your backyard pond, Medaka (Japanese rice fish) are a rewarding and low-maintenance choice. Follow these basic care guidelines to keep your fish thriving year-round.
🏡 Habitat Setup
Ideal Environments:
-
Outdoor ponds
-
Patio tubs or containers
-
Balcony water gardens
-
Whiskey barrel ponds or ceramic bowls
Minimum water depth:
-
At least 25–30 cm (10–12") to allow for temperature regulation and shelter
Container size:
-
A group of 10 Medaka will do well in as little as 20–40 liters (5–10 gallons), though more space is always better.
Water Conditions:
-
Temperature: 5°C to 30°C (41°F to 86°F)
-
pH: 6.5–8.0
-
Water changes: ~25% every 1–2 weeks for containers, depending on the size of container, number of fish, feed, etc.
-
Use dechlorinated water (tap water must be treated before use)
🍃 Filtration & Aeration
-
Optional for small outdoor setups, but recommended for larger or heavily stocked ponds.
-
Live plants (like water lettuce, hornwort, or floating hyacinth) help maintain water quality and provide shade and hiding spots.
🌿 Plants & Companions
Medaka love planted environments. Great plant options: Water lettuce, Hornwort, Duckweed, Anacharis
Safe tankmates:
-
Snails, shrimp, or peaceful nano fish.
-
Avoid aggressive or large fish, though with adequate space and shelter they can do well with goldfish and koi.
🍽️ Feeding
Medaka are omnivores and easy to feed.
What to feed:
-
High-quality floating micro pellets
-
Crushed flakes
-
Live or frozen treats (daphnia, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae)
How often:
-
1–2 times per day, only as much as they can eat in a couple of minutes
❄️ Winter in Vancouver
Medaka can survive Vancouver winters outdoors with proper care.
Winter tips:
-
Ensure your pond is deep enough (30 cm+) to prevent freezing solid
-
Add plant cover or shelters (e.g. ceramic pots, pond netting)
-
Stop feeding once temperatures drop below 10°C — their metabolism slows naturally
If you're using a small container or patio setup that freezes completely, you may want to move the fish indoors for winter.
💡 Quick Tips
- Use a net or mesh cover to prevent predators
- Avoid sharp decorations — medaka are delicate
- Observe them daily to catch any health issues early
- Keep the water clean and stable
